The Harold Porter Botanical Gardens in Betty's Bay have donated a water tank to the school. This is a wonderful gift because for two years now the vegetable garden at the school has been under-utilised because we couldn't pay for water in the hot summer months. Before then the children's treat at break was a handful of baby tomatoes or a carrot or chunk of cabbage and no one refused the spinach at lunchtime because it was their spinach.
The water tank connected to the gutters will make it possible to store water for the summer so we can grow our own veggies all year around again. Breakfast and a hot lunch are provided for all the children since there is not always food at home and fresh veggies not only benefit the children's health but also help reduce the food bill. There is also great wisdom for a child to learn in a garden while helping to plant and weed, water and harvest.
We have been trying to find a way to get hold of a second hand tank without having the money to pay for it and suddenly the problem is solved. It's a weight off the fundraisers' shoulders and Zaan Cilliers, our Principal, was in tears when it arrived and thanked the Management of The Gardens from the bottom of her heart.
